If [lildevil_14] had said something like "I like these entries, and the rest are rubbish" (which I'm sure I have seen said on various contests), then yes that would be quite mean. But I think you should be allowed to point out what you like (how many people say "I really like that" when a new entry they like is first posted?). If I said to an artist here in these comments "I like your art", it would naturally imply I liked their entry, and be a compliment to the artist, and not meant as a slight to anyone else. But I wouldn't want to have to tell everyone else that too through ET-political-c

2006-07-12 [kay-chan]: There's an unwritten rule for ET contests: if you can't say anything nice about everybody in the comments, don't say anything at all. If you wish to compliment an artist... sending them a private message is just a click away. If someone said "these are the best" then the other people who entered would think 'well geez, why did I even enter anyway?' and be discouraged to further enter contests.

I don't see a lot of point in a comment box if people aren't able to compliment the art - part of the reason of these competitions is to bring elftowners art with a similar theme together for people to see and admire (including after the contest has passed - hence the always uploaded to et rule). And maybe if she'd said 'these ones are the best' implying the rest were rubbish, but she didn't! She said 'I like these ones' which is a quite different statement (expressing opinion rather than expressing fact).
2006-07-12 [shotokan_gal]: Also, entering a competition is naturally putting your work up against other aritsts, to be judged in an admittedly subjective way. In a competition most people have to naturally expect that there could be work better or worse than theirs (and this goes for myself too) - that's because it's a competition. You could say why would people bother entering at all if they weren't prepared for the competition they'd encounter? I personally would refrain from comments like that too often, because I'll be voting in the poll which determines the mainstreet entries. [lildevil_14] has no such responsibility there.

Those who were 'offended' that someone with their own entirely subjective opinion, who doesn't influence the crew poll at all, didn't compliment their work? Or the contest newbie who tries to be nice by complimenting the art she likes here, and instead gets told off for breaking 'unwritten rules' which she knows nothing about (on account of not being in the contest rules)?
2006-07-12 [iippo]: I didn't know of this unwritten rule either, and all contests I know of haven't known about it either, because there is always "your entry is awesome, Artist_A!" In a contest wiki there isn't much to talk about that wouldn't be off-topic; talking about the entries is one of those few topics that isn't off.
2006-07-12 [Sunrose]: The unwritten rule is: 'If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.' That rule doesn't apply to contests specifically, it's related to the 'Don't be an asshole'-rule and applies to all of Elftown. Saying something nice about someone's art, doesn't mean you're an asshole to everyone else, for not complimenting them too O_o It has never been against the rules to compliment someone's work, you interpreted this rule very differently from how it is intended.

So somone critisizing my art, doest bother me, Becuase I know, I have people who like it. You can even tell me that the top is too big. Because I know it is. Its suposed to b e. I also understand that someone naming a couple of artists they like, leaving the others out, may be perceived as hurtful when you're not named. But as [shotokan_gal] said, all artists here entered a competition and fact is that everyone tends to have favorites. It doesn't mean the other pieces are bad or anything...

2006-07-12 [Cathos]: There are two reasons that I love entering these comps. 1. to push myself to get better at drawing and 2. to hear what other people think of my art. I neeeed the constructive critisism that the comment box can give. I understand that its very easy to take insult where none is meant from a typed comment (tone of voice conveys so much!). If this is so much of a hot topic, why not add "constructive critisism by personal comment to artist only" to the rules?

A helpful hint though for coloured pencils - get a blending pencil (they're just clear 'coloured' penciles) and use it when you've got large patches of one colour, such as the sky. This way you can have a smooth colour and still keep it light. :) keep drawing!
